ISSN 0001-5555 Telangiectasias are small dilated vessels observed after inflammatory diseases, radiotherapy and in vascular malformations, such as Sturge-Weber neurovascular syndrome (1). Purpura is a discoloration of the skin due to extravasation of red blood cells. Extravasated blood is broken down to various metabolites derived from haem within 3 weeks. Purpura can originate from platelet or coagulation disorders, elevated intravascular pressure, vasculitis or toxic reactions to drugs. Purpura lesions do not blanch on applying pressure (diascopy) (2). Treatment of metastatic malignant disease often involves regional lymph node dissection. Axillary lymph node clearance involves removal of all lymph nodes in levels I–III. The intercostobrachial sensory nerves in the area are removed, but the motor nerves (long thoracic and thoracodorsal nn.) are preserved (3, 4). Significant morbidity can be related to axillary dissection including seroma, wound infection, haematoma, neuro praxia, lymphoedema and shoulder dysfunction (3, 5). We present here 2 cases of transient purpura discoloration of the skin after axillary dissection in 2 patients with different malignancies.

Standardization of whole breast radiotherapy is required for safe omission of axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer patients
Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the dose distribution and coverage of level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph nodes during whole breast tangential field radiotherapy (RT) after breast-conserving surgery in patients with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph node volumes were retrospectively contoured by a single radiation oncologist based on computed tomography...
متن کاملAxillary lymph node metastasis in medullary thyroid carcinoma: A case report
Introduction: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is an uncommon neoplasm originating from parafollicular C cells. Distant metastasis in MTC, such as axillary node involvement, is extremely rare. Case Report: The present study describes a known case of MTC with axillary lymph node metastasis in a 31-year-old woman. In 2010, she underwent total thyroidectomy and right-sided modified radical neck dis...
متن کاملStewart-Treves Syndrome after Bilateral Mastectomy and Radiotherapy for Breast Carcinoma: Case Report.
Stewart-Treves syndrome is an angiosarcoma that occurs because of chronic lymphedema, which in most cases is a complication after mastectomy with axillary node dissection and postoperative radiation. Prognosis for this rare tumor is poor. The best therapy is early and radical excision. Chronic lymphedema seems to be an important pathogenic factor. We report a 59-year-old patient with chronic ly...
متن کاملA Randomized Controlled Trial on the Prevention of Seroma after Partial or Total Mastectomy and Axillary Lymph Node Dissection.
BACKGROUND: Wound seroma is one of the most frequent complications of mastectomy, but an effective strategy for its prevention has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of delayed shoulder exercise on the prevention of wound seroma after partial or total mastectomy with axillary dissection for the treatment of cancer. METHODS: This study prospect...
متن کاملAxillary dissection in primary breast cancer: variations of the surgical technique and influence on morbidity
Lymphedema of the arm is the most common and impairing complication after breast cancer surgery with axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). Our prospective study evaluated the effect of two different surgical techniques for ALND on postoperative morbidity. Patients were scheduled to undergo ALND. Patients in group 1 (n = 17) underwent the most common and standard technique of ALND, which uses s...
